2007 Bulldog Invitational T&F Meet
Friday, May 4th, 2007
Yellow Springs HS
In an perfect night for Track and Field, both from an
athlete and a spectators point of view, seven (7) records were broken, as
the Bethel Bees, from Tipp City, won both the men’s and women’s titles at
the 7th annual Bulldog Invitational.
Leading the way was Yellow Springs senior Samuel Borchers. Borchers, won
both the 800 and 1600 meter runs anchored the record setting 3200m relay.
Joining Borchers on the record setting 4x8 were fellow senior Evan Firestone,
junior Andy Peters, ad freshman Alexis Onfroy-Curley. Their winning time
was 8:16.7. In the 1600m run Borchers just missed the meet record as he
paced friendly rival Chad McCarty to a personal best. Borcher’s time was
4:35.5. Shawnee’s Jordan Davies benefited from Borchers pacing in the 800
as both athletes popped off record times. For Borchers it was his second
Bulldog Invitational meet record of the evening. Davies runner-up finish
was good for a Shawnee HS school record.
A pair of sophomores also made noise with their performances. Anthony Pettiford
surprised the field when he came out of the slow section to tie for second
overall in the 400 meter dash with a huge PR. His time was 56.7, matching
Shawnee's Tyler Huntsman. Also surprising the field in his race was Jacob
Gunderkline. 'Gundy' showed a knack for the Olympic style walking when
he grabbed second place in the 800 meter walk in a PR time of 4:02.7.
Additional top drawer performances were turned in by Andy Peters, 3rd in
the 300 meter hurdles (44.2) and Brock Gunderkline, 3rd in the 3200m run
(10:34.3). Ron Cobb added a 4th place finish in the 200 meter dash (24.4)
while Alexis Onfroy-Curley did likewise in the 800m run (2:06.8). In the
field events Anthony Pettiford placed 4th in the triple jump with a leap
of 33 feet 7 inches. Raphael Allen was right behind in 5th with his best
leap of 31'6".
The men's team went on to finish 3rd overall to both Bethel and Springfield
Shawnee with 73 points.
The YS women's team finished 6th out of the 10 schools competing. Relays
were one of the squad's strengths as the foursome of Maiya Thornton-Hodge,
Kristen Foster, Brenda Jones, and Leslie Holland grabbed a pair of fourth
place finishes. In the 4x100 the Bulldogs roared to a solid 56.8 clocking
while in the 4x200m a 2:00.1 accomplished the feat.
Individually Sarah Acomb added six points with a third place finish in the
race walk (5:34.0) after only a couple days of practice in that event. Leslie
Holland grabbed a 5th in the 200 meter dash with Kristen Foster adding a
pair of 6th place points from her placings in the 100 and 200 meter sprints.
Ashanta Robinson showed that she has the talent to make
a mark in the track world when she tied for second in the high jump with
a leap of 4'8", a lifetime best. Melodie Wright surprised her competition
in the discus with a 6th place toss of 63'1" - a lifetime best.
